Choosing The Right Medicare Advantage Plan
There are a number of considerations to make when choosing the right Guide To Selecting A Medicare Advantage Plan for your specific healthcare needs. By carefully evaluating the benefits, doctor networks and costs of available plans, you can ensure that the coverage you select meets your needs while also keeping your healthcare costs affordable. Comparing coverage and costs, including premiums, deductibles, copayments and out-of-pocket maximums can help you find the best value plan for your budget.
Medicare Advantage (MA) plans offer additional services and coverage that goes beyond what Original Medicare Parts A and B provide. In addition to covering hospital, medical and outpatient care, MA plans often include prescription drug coverage as well. These benefits are wrapped into a single plan for convenience and simplification. Most MA plans have networks of doctors, other health care providers and hospitals that you can use, but some may allow you to go out of network for a higher copayment or coinsurance.
Individuals are allowed to enroll in MA plans during open enrollment each year, which takes place from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. During this time, you can join any Medicare Advantage plan that serves your area and your coverage will begin on Jan. 1 of the following year. Generally, you cannot switch to or from a Medicare Advantage plan during other periods except when you are moving into or out of your area.
Choosing the Right MA Plan
In addition to considering your healthcare needs and budget, it’s important to look at your current and anticipated medical needs when selecting an MA plan. This includes a review of your medication list, frequency of physician visits and the need for specialty care or other services not covered by Original Medicare. It’s also helpful to consult with your primary care doctor and/or any healthcare specialists you work with regularly to gain a full understanding of your medical history and treatment options.
You should also consider whether you are required to take any medications that are not covered by Medicare, and if so, the cost of those drugs. In this way, you can choose the best MA plan to meet your specific drug needs.
MA plans are required to cover all the services offered under Original Medicare, but most offer additional benefits such as coverage for dental, hearing and vision care. They are also typically required to offer prescription drug coverage, which is included in the plan's monthly premium.
The Centers for Medicare Services assigns MA plans a star rating based on member surveys and evaluations from the plans themselves, plus their performance on a variety of quality measures.
