Summer is in full swing and that means one thing: time to hit the beach! But before you do, make sure you know how to protect your skin from the sun. Here are some tips to help keep you safe this summer:

Wear sunscreen

This is the most important thing you can do to protect your skin from the sun. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days. And don’t forget to reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re sweating or swimming.

Be sure to apply sunscreen generously, and don't forget often-missed spots like your scalp, ears, neck, lips, and the backs of your hands. You'll also need to reapply more frequently when you're sweating or swimming.

If you can't find a sunscreen you like or if you have sensitive skin, try a mineral sunscreen. It contains ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that sit on top of your skin to block UV rays.

You can also protect your skin by covering it up with clothing, including long-sleeved shirts, pants, hats, and sunglasses. Look for clothes made with tightly woven fabric, and don't forget to apply sunscreen to exposed areas.

UV rays can also penetrate clouds, so don't let cloudy weather fool you into thinking you're safe from their harmful effects. Take the same precautions on cloudy days as you would on sunny days.

Watch for symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, rapid breathing, and increased heart rate. If you experience any of these, get out of the sun and into a cool, shady spot. Drink lots of fluids, too. And never, ever leave kids or pets alone in a parked car — not even for a minute.

If you have to be outside on a hot day, wear loose, lightweight clothing and a hat. Don't forget to put sunscreen on your ears, back of your neck, and tops of your feet.

When you're done with your outdoor activities for the day, take a cool shower or bath. Or apply cool compresses to your skin. Doing this will help you lower your body temperature.

Dehydration is a big risk on hot days. So, it's important to drink fluids even if you don't feel thirsty. Water is the best choice. But if you're going to be outside for a while, sports drinks can help replace electrolytes like sodium and potassium that you lose through sweat.

If you have a chronic medical condition, such as heart disease or diabetes, check with your doctor before spending extended time in the heat. People who take certain medications — such as diuretics, sedatives, beta-blockers, and some antipsychotics — may be more prone to heat-related problems.

Check your skin regularly for changes.

Perform a self-exam every month, looking for new moles or changes in existing ones. If you notice anything unusual, make an appointment to see a dermatologist. Be sure to tell the doctor if you have a family history of melanoma.

If your doctor suspects you have melanoma, he or she will likely order a biopsy, during which a small piece of tissue is removed and examined under a microscope. If the diagnosis is melanoma, your doctor will stage cancer, which helps determine the best treatment plan.
